Help with funeral costs

There are several types of financial support available to help with funeral expenses. These services are provided by the government and local authorities, and eligibility depends on your circumstances. Below are the main options.

Types of Support

Funeral Expense Payment

This payment is available to people who claim certain benefits and need help paying the associated costs with a funeral. It usually does not cover the full cost. The amount you receive depends on your situation and any other funds available (such as insurance or the deceased’s estate)

Bereavement Support Payment

If your partner died on or after 6 April 2017, you may be eligible if:

you are under State Pension age, you were married or in a civil partnership with the person who died, the person paid income tax for at least 6 months between 1975 and the date of death or the death was caused by work.

Budgeting Loan

An interest-free loan for those on income-related benefits to help with funeral costs.

Repayments are taken directly from your benefits
Maximum amount: £812 (if you have children)
Eligibility depends on benefits received and savings, and your age if over 62.

Children’s Funeral Fund

Available in England to cover burial or cremation fees for children’s funerals. Funeral directors and burial/cremation authorities claim these fees back on your behalf.

Up to £300 towards a coffin
Does not cover funeral director services or extras like flowers.
